SA20 Boost: Allan Donald Optimistic for Cricket’s Future in South Africa
Former South Africa pace legend Allan Donald is optimistic about the positive impact of SA20 not only on T20s but on all formats of the game in the country. Despite South Africa’s recent strong performance in the Test series against India, concerns have emerged about the nation’s future in Test cricket. The upcoming two-Test series in New Zealand will feature a second-string team captained by the uncapped Neil Brand, with key players participating in the SA20 T20 league. This shift has prompted former captain Dean Elgar to retire, citing the lack of Test matches.
Donald emphasized the importance of SA20 influencing red-ball cricket positively, considering the league’s significant role in revitalizing South African cricket. Reflecting on the state of cricket three years ago, he commended the efforts of Graeme Smith and his team, highlighting the quality of overseas and young South African players and the enthusiastic crowds. Donald sees SA20 as a crucial step in the right direction for cricket in South Africa, not limited to white-ball formats but extending to red-ball cricket, with notable improvements observed in the first-class system.
Expressing empathy for the players selected for the New Zealand tour, particularly the uncapped ones, Donald acknowledged the challenges they face against one of the world’s best Test teams in unfamiliar conditions. He noted the criticism labeling the team as a ‘B’ or ‘C’ team and emphasized the need for a clearer calendar without major Test series disruptions. Donald suggested that the current situation serves as a warning, urging careful planning for the future to ensure the selection of the best Test team. Despite the challenges, he expressed confidence in coach Shukri Conrad’s ability to rally the team and play competitive cricket, while also anticipating strategic planning by the authorities for the upcoming years.
